Historical Background

Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere (MJKN) is a private day and boarding school, incorporating both Primary and Nursery located at Mbezi Beach Kinondoni District, Dar es slaam Region. The school was formally founded on September 12, 1997 when it was fully registered by the ministry of Education. The primary school was allocated Registration number DS.02/7/027 and Nursery school registration number is DS.02/7/E.A027. Mwalimu Julius K Nyerere school started operations twenty-five years ago on 22nd September 1977 at a rented house at Malongwe street, facing Ng’ombe valley at Mwananyamala area, Kinondoni Municipal Council and moved to its current location in Mbezi Beach five years later. The school started with 32 pupils out of whom 12 were Nursery pupils and 20 were Primary pupils under six teachers. The plot on which the school currently stands was leased from Government, with the support of Mzee Rashid Mfaume Kawawa, the late independent and past independent hero, who at various times of his political life served as Minister, Vice President, Prime Minister and as both Vice Chairman and Secretary General of Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. Mwalimu Julius K Nyerere school was one of the first private learning institutions to be established in the country following the policy decision by the Government of President Benjamin William Mkapa to liberalize the education sector. The school was sponsored by Habari Corporation Limited (HCL), then one of the Tanzania’s leading media houses in the country, and Directors of HCL become the founding shareholders of the school. They are JENERALI ULIMWENGU, SALVATOR RWEYEMAMU, SHAABAN KANUWA, Dr. GIDEON SHOO and JOHNSON MBWAMBO. Habari Corporation assigned the ownership of the school to Maarifa Media Trust (MAMET), its training wing. The ownership structure remains unchanged to-date. Under the guidance of Mwalimu Mwantumu Bakari Mahiza, the founding head teacher, the School quickly outperformed more schools academically, including those owned by Government, to become a top School in the region a position it held for a long time. Contrary to some perceptions the school is not a memorial school for Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, the founder of our nation and pioneer of our independence, though he was informed of the use of his Name and did not object to it. The name, therefore has nothing to do with the ownership of the School. It, merely is, a reflection of the realization of Mwalimu Nyerere’s massive contributions to the development of this country, and especially in Education. However, the school has and continues to enjoy close relationship with both Nyerere Family and Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF). Mama Maria Nyerere the wonderful mother of the nation was the Guest of Honor at the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of School on April 5, 2001, and the Chairman of the MNF, honorable Salim Ahmed Salim, officially opened the School nine months later, on January 5, 2002. Over two decades of its existence, MJKN School has produced thousands of wonderful graduates and responsible citizens, most of whom have gone on to join our Government, national and international organizations as well as private sector. The school remains as massive name and force reckon with in the nation’s education set-up.
